Why Twitter is Important and How You Can Make it Work
Posted By Joe On September 23, 2009 @ 4:13 pm In Social Media & SEO | No Comments
We haven’t written extensively on Twitter just yet (a few articles here and there) so I thought I’d take the bull by the horns and write about the ever-growing popularity of this gargantuan little bird. Specifically, I’ll discuss why Twitter is important and how you can gain more followers.
Social media gains more importance in the eyes of marketers just about everyday. We’ve walked through the door of open, direct communication with customers/clients/colleagues and there is no turning back. Over time I’m sure certain sites will crop up, gain popularity and buzz, and then fade. And there will be sites that unexpectedly become powerhouses. I mean, where was Twitter two years ago? And now you can’t get away from it.
A large number of businesses are using Twitter for a variety of different reasons. According to Maki at Dosh Dosh , there are numerous ways for businesses to utilize Twitter and here are just a few of them:
Get Feedback: If you’re working on a project and want direct feedback, you can just post a Tweet asking for feedback and let those who follow you on Twitter tell you what they think. Hopefully, the followers you have accumulated are engaged and like-minded so that you can trust what they have to say.
Find New Hires: Twitter can be great for blasting out calls for resumes. And let’s face it, if you’re related to anything technology based, a likely well-qualified candidate should be on Twitter already.
Networking: This is obvious. But Twitter is great for connecting with people in your community and your field.
In-house communication: Businesses are using Twitter as a form of in-house communication. Let’s face it, if you want to tell numerous people a small tid-bit of information, Twitter should do the job effectively.
Customer Relations: And according to an article at BusinessWeek , “Businesses such as H&R Block (HRB) and Zappos are now using Twitter to respond to customer queries.”
These are just why businesses are using Twitter. Of course, the sky is the limit in regards to your creativity and your ways of using this application.
And we haven’t even mentioned that Twitter can generate links and traffic to your site! A very nice boost for your SEO efforts. Nice, indeed!
So, how do you get links and followers? As with any social engagement, there are rules, etiquette and best practices to which you should adhere. If you’re knee-deep in Twitter, you’re probably doing these things. But if you haven’t started on Twitter yet, consider:
Create a Twitter identity: Choose a user name that makes sense and is relevant to your company name or your own name. Choose a picture or logo that can easily be associated with you. Probably a pic of your smiling face or company logo will do. And don’t forget to include a brief description of who you are and what you do.
Follow People: Since Twitter is all about community, you need to get out there and build relationships. On Twitter, you need to follow people with whom you’d like to engage in conversation. Following people is a great way to build your own follower base.
Re-Tweet: If you find Tweets interesting, go ahead and re-tweet them. Pass the love! This is a great way to show people that you’re engaged and enthusiastic.
Observe other Twitters: If you find someone in your industry who has a ton of followers and seems to “get Twitter,” then you should follow them closely to see how they do it. Why re-invent the wheel?
Weighty Tweets: Position yourself as an authority in just 140 characters! It seems difficult but once you get the hang of tweet slang, you’ll be just fine. As you are getting great info from people you’re following, you also need to provide interesting and valuable tweets as well.
So, we’ve briefly discussed why Twitter is important, how businesses are using Twitter and how you can gain followers. Now, get out there and start writing those 140 character masterpieces!
