Want to Learn How to Start a Career in SEO? Cut Your Teeth on Affiliate Marketing

Attend enough events and after-parties and eventually you becomes assimilated within the culture. You meet the people, become familiar with the cliques and discover that no matter your walks of life, y’all are in the same place.

By far, the #1 question I get asked at events never changes:

“How did you learn about SEO?”

Especially from students. Those who are getting degrees to become jacks of all trades and masters of none.

And as I’ve said before, I’ve gotten lucky. I had an employer at an internet marketing agency that had SEO issues and I got the opportunity to crash-course and round out my SEO knowledge. Then I was left the the opportunity to work on a few hundred commerce websites. Not everyone gets those opportunities.

One of the best ways I’ve ever heard of people learning how to do SEO on their own is through Affiliate Marketing.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is the commission-only means of internet marketing. Not an easy road to hoe, and the best companies won’t let you sell their stuff until you have a proven track record, but with dedication and persistence you’ll be able to build a nice resume as well as work on all sorts of SEO tactics.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

Affiliate marketing works in a variety of different way but the premise is typically the same.

  • Develop website(s).
  • Generate relevant traffic to the website.
  • Send traffic to commerce / lead generation sites.
  • When the traffic converts, you get a cut of the sales.

Sounds simple, but if it was then everyone would do it.

With affiliate marketing, you’re forced to pull out all the tricks to generate traffic, build links and practice analyzing and targeting which keywords to rank. And the way you’ll know you’re being successful is by the money you are (or are not) making.

It won’t be easy and it will take you months to get it right. But if you have a love for SEO and time to work on it, affiliate marketing is the beautiful, “baptismal by fire” way to build your SEO skill set.

And eventually, you get paid doing it.
