Having a blog on your website is a great way to keep content fresh and boost page rank.  If you are thinking about creating a blog for your site you should read the Daily Blog Tips post on the 15 things to know before blogging [1]. This article is filled with tips gathered from the author’s five years of experience.  These pointers will help you avoid some common blogging mistakes as well as find the right niche to target. Follow these 15 tips and you’ll be on your way to creating and maintaining a successful blog.

Youtube is beginning to “explore” its vast SEO capabilities [2] through its TestTube labs, according to Danny Sullivan’s post on Search Engine Land. This new feature, actually called “Topic Search,” allows Youtube to sort videos by topic. For example, you could search for videos about “shoes,” then you could narrow down your results to “red shoes” only. Basically, this feature has tremendous potential because you would be able to optimize your products with Youtube videos, then properly and easily sort them into categories that people are looking for. It is still in the beta stage, but be ready when it does come out.

Search marketing professionals are often presented websites that have already been designed, implemented, and running for some time (even if it’s not well).  But what happens when a client wants an entirely new website?  While it may be tempting to simply hand off the project to a designer [3], remember that setting up good SEO metrics from the start is an indispensible part of website development.  Luckily, Rand of SEOmoz.com has compiled a comprehensive list of 18 SEM steps to launching a new website. [4] From knowing which analytics options to install to setting up social media connections, this rundown is detailed, thorough, and a must-have for anyone about to build their own website.  Happy launching!

Getting consumers to your site is only half the battle.  Eventually, you’d like to see those visitors make a purchase, right? Of course you do! The National Federation of Retailers reports that 44 percent of shoppers over the age of 18 will go online for their holiday shopping, according to Dan Yomtobian’s post on Search Engine Watch.  While that’s an increase from last year, Dan says that 96 percent of those shoppers leave a site without buying.  This holiday season, consider forming a remarketing strategy [5] to target those consumers who ditched their purchase choices because they weren’t ready to buy.

If you’ve been in SEO for any amount of time, you know that it’s all about the user. When you do keyword research, when you design your site when you try to fit keywords into site content [6]—it’s all about the user.  In an attempt to incorporate keywords, sometimes we can kill the content. The point is not for these terms to stand out like sore thumbs [7], but that they will seamlessly integrate into the site content. Stoney deGeyter of Search Engine Guide give some excellent advice on how to effectively optimize to bring in the targeted traffic you’re looking for.
