SEO News Roundup for December 17, 2010

If you want to help boost your location on SERPs [1] try using more internal links. Michael Gray of Graywolf’s SEO Blog explains that a great and easy way to help your rankings on the SERPs is to have internal links rich in the text of your site. For instance, he discusses how the New York Times (at the time of his post) was top-ranked for terms for Conservative politicians such as Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. The reason this happened, he explains, is because all throughout the article there were numerous links to other NY Times articles. Here is the article—take a look at a great example of internal links. [2]

We’re two weeks from 2011, which means it’s time to take a step back and reflect on the big SEO events of 2010 [3]. From the Bing/Yahoo merger to Google’s May Day update, Eric Enge’s blog on Search Engine Watch walks us through the changes that affected the way people search, redefined what search engines value and rerouted the techniques of SEMs. It’s a good reminder of how quickly the world of the Internet can change, and his predictions for 2011 are insightful and interesting.  The take-away message? A more traditional marketing approach applied to online content may be a SEM’s best bet in the New Year!

Bing announced that specific links ‘liked’ by Facebook friends will be highlighted on the Bing SERP [4]. Jonathan Allen of Search Engine Watch describes to us how this might be a new Bing ranking factor, and points out the potential changes in a user’s attention when they view the SERP. Jonathan says it could be a new ranking factor for the search engine, however, even Bing says that the algorithm didn’t determine the ‘liked’ result to be most relevant to the search query.

I am a fan of almost anything that starts with the word “free.” On Monday, Ann Smarty of Search Engine Journal wrote about the launch of a Free SEO Report [5]. This tool generates in-depth competition research reports based off of a keyword. It compares your SEO efforts against all of the top 10 sites ranking for your keyword in a given search engine. The report also provides recommendations based on what your competitors are doing versus what you are doing. Read Smarty’s post to get more in depth on the breakdown of information you can get from this Free SEO Report.

Here’s the scenario: you’re a small business owner and you need SEO done cheaply. You long to see your precious little web site near the top of the first page, but, like many people in the world, you’re just a little short on money [6]. Well, Kate Morris wrote a great post on SEOmoz this week with ideas for doing SEO cheaply [7]. Some things she suggests are going to local conferences, working out exchange services and building relationships (non-creepily) on Twitter. Some of her ideas cost nothing, and some cost a lifetime. But isn’t it worth it to see your business succeed on the web?
