Local SEO: The Low Hanging Fruit

The notion of low hanging fruit has both positive and negative connotations – except in Local SEO.
Any fruit you can grab without getting out the ladder or exerting yourself by climbing up a tree. It’s easy. It’s quick, and it’s good. Some business can’t “pay for the ladder” nor do they have the time to “climb the tree.” What if there was a way to just grab some fruit that was just within reach? Do you like analogies? I sure do!
So what is some of this fruit for Local SEO?
1. The lowest fruit is the Google Local Business Center – If you don’t do anything else, claim your business here. Claim all the categories and subjects your business represents. Put up photos, coupons, video and detailed descriptions of your unique position in your market.
Google Maps relies heavily on the Local Business Center to bring up within a region the topics the searcher is looking for. It makes a large difference as more and more directory services clog the organic listings, people will look to the map and click on a link to a review, coupon or url.
2. City and State along with your business name in your title tags. Don’t just put a subject of your page like “residential realty” or “catering” or “plumbing” or “contact us” or “home” in your titles. Make them your own with a precise title such as “Catering | Mike’s Food Service | Smallville, Ks.
The more unique your make your title tags per service you provide, the greater the chance you’ll be able to be indexed for your services that others are looking for. The company name in your title tag helps index your pages when people look for you by using the search engine. If you have a difficult URL or if your URL isn’t top place in your advertising, people will type your business name in the search engines and find you that way. So make it easy for them! Also, the city identifier triggers many good things for your customers.
3. City and State in an H1 tag on your page. This is something I tried and found it really worked both for SEO and usability for some reason.
My guess is that it further solidifies the importance of your location. It may seem odd, but I couldn’t deny the amount of click-thrus on it and hesitate to change it.
So there you go. The lowest hanging Local SEO fruit there is. For some businesses, this will do a lot of good. For others, you might have to climb up just a bit.
