Local Search strategies for SEO have been in use for some time now, but they’ve never quite bubbled to the surface, or hit the mainstream if you will. That being said, I’d like to ask a question: How can you spot a real trend? When it appears in a newspaper.
I don’t read a lot of newspapers. I really don’t. There is still part of me that wants to read the paper, but that is from a social memory of watching images of dads and business people flipping open the paper with their coffee at their side. As I type this, I think about how my children won’t have that inkling. The newspaper has evolved into something else and there are numerous reports and blogs about newspaper declines.
The newspaper is something I consider as a barometer on how far a trend has pierced into American society. I have met newspaper editors, journalists and advertising sales reps. The pace is quite hectic to keep the news going because it is expected. I consider it a second to the post office as one of the most stressful places to work. I take that into consideration when I see news articles about trends or points of interest. I tell myself, “this made those stressed people say ‘hmmm, let’s run that one’ rather than cast it aside.” No, it’s not an accurate filter, but it does make sense and this is where it ties into my topic.
This article from USA Today brings the revelation of Local Search to the masses, so to speak. I’ve always considered the USA Today as a “starter paper.” It has to appeal to the largest population everyday and it has brightly colored headings and weather maps. It does well to keep the traveling business person occupied when they have a layover or a meeting at the hotel was delayed a couple hours.
But I kid the USA Today.
Even though those in the Online Marketing industry have known about Local Search methods for years, the fact that it has reached a “dead tree” medium is sort of ironic. This gives me two things to dwell on:
- Local Search is not a fad
- The transient business culture now knows about it
On the same day of this article, Network Solutions announced their local search solution. Coincidence? Well, maybe not, but it is really good timing. Even with bleak economic indicators, money is still changing hands and business owners are looking to find out how to grab their share and SEO is a means to an end and is still thriving.
So if you are wondering if you should have an Local Search SEO side to your marketing, the cat’s out of the bag. If the USA Today makes it back to the main office, there’s a chance that your competitor will get a jump on out-marketing you online.
