This week, Google announced the release of 27 designer mobile templates to Blogger users, which had previously only been available in draft. The new templates will be completely supported by Blogger. The designer templates are mobile-optimized, which means if you enable the mobile option for your blog using one of these templates, it will be rendered on mobile devices with a mobile version of the same template. Google also notes that even if you aren’t using one of the 27 mobile-optimized templates, you can still enable mobile-optimization for other templates, including your own custom templates, and your blog will be rendered using a generic/default mobile template.
Given the ease of blogs to boost SEO efforts with fresh content, and the rising number of mobile users accessing blog content, the release of mobile-friendly templates will go a long way in boosting Blogger users’ SEO efforts. According to a March 2011 Mobile Subscriber Market Share report by comScore, the number of mobile subscribers accessing social networking sites and blogs from their mobile devices rose 2.6% in 2011, bringing mobile blog access up to 27.3% from 24.7% in 2010. If your blog is not optimized for mobile devices, you could be losing over a quarter of your potential traffic.
The icing on the Blogger cake is that these new templates make your blog’s mobile-optimization as simple as checking one extra box in your blog’s settings. Not only that, but you can preview how your blog will display on a mobile device from your computer with a Mobile Preview button, or you can preview on a smartphone by scanning a QR-code. You can read more about these features on Blogger’s official blog: Announcing Mobile Templates.
We’d love to hear from anyone that has started using a Blogger mobile template, so feel free to share your experiences and/or comments below.
